I had some art history in school and I’m not sure why I didn’t return to it. Seeing these works and reading about how the artists thought of art and existed has given me a lot to think about. Viewing Picasso’s Las Meninas alongside Velázquez’s original brought back memories of seeing the Velázquez as a teenager and being greatly affected by it. We studied many details but I was fixated on Diego’s gaze. I felt he saw me, when those around me did not. I had forgotten that until now. The museum in Barcelona contains Picasso’s 58 interpretations of Las Meninas in one room. That’s really something.
