This is my first retro handheld, and I enjoy it, but I was surprised to find I like tinkering with it and researching old games and systems almost as much as playing the games themselves. This page has fleeting notes on a few of my experiments to incorporate fantasy consoles or more obscure systems. For general information, check out 's fantastic RP2 site, Retroidnoobs.
PICO-8 is a fantasy console I briefly experimented with. You can get the P8 player on Google Play or the Internet Archive but it runs in vertical mode and you have to use the touchscreen.
You can use P8 to download and save carts. Once downloaded, share the cart with the app. P8's library screen will load sideways, but the games run in landscape mode and once you click the screen the button inputs usually work.
Retroarch64 does have a Retro8 PICO-8 core, but I could not get the core to read .png cart files. I read a comment that Retro8 requires .p8 (source code) format but I had trouble finding an easy way to convert carts. Attempting to convert a .txt file of source or zipping the .p8.png files didn't work either. The only way that works for me is to boot up PICO-8, use SPLORE to download the cart, then load and save as a .p8 file.
Retroarch will not scan a PICO-8 directory and import the carts to a list as it will with other ROMs. So for now, P8 seems to be the better choice.
Arduboy is an ongoing portable console of interest. Arby Emulator. You can use the touchscreen to play, but I haven't found a way to map the buttons. For games, check out Erwin's Arduboy Collection.
Just a list of the options. I find the stock frontend good enough for now and preferred it to DIG, which was also loaded.
